In 1996, Isabelle Sordage, sound artist, set up the associative structure and tackled the issue of sound practices that she developed with the artist Lars Fredrikson. From 2002, she welcomes artists in residence at “the Villa les Vallières”, and invites them to produce in an open dialogue with the public.

She favors the work of research process and offers the hosted artist the possibility to leave an active device that will then be available to the following residents. This can be done either by writing, reflection, or by plastic confrontation. Over time, all sorts of documents have been accumulated but also works that have come to coexist in the villa.

As a result, the “Villa les Vallières” became the object of a reflection privileging the process of creation, until the construction of an extension resulting from the project “the embedded art in architecture”. Presented for the first time in 2011 with the architecture firm Conte / Vollenweider and artists Pascale Tiraboschi, Fabrice Gallis, Ludovic Lignon and Isabelle Sordage, this project is under development.

The question of sound practices is maintained. Eliane Radigue has supported the project since the 2000s and completed a residency in 2013 during which she designed the OCCAM OCEAM. A work by Lars Fredrikson was also installed in 2016.

Every year in July, the village of Clans becomes a place dedicated to experimentation where various sectors of research intersect in a spirit of complementarity. Antoine Kouchner was welcomed in 2017 to present a neutrino capture system and is working with the artist Pascale Tiraboschi. These laboratory weeks open up for artists new fields of exploration and innovation.

Since 2018, the Experimental Workshop opens a Nice antenna, a 100 m2 premises located at 21 rue droite: the “ESPACE ROSSETTI”. In addition to initiating new experiences, white cards are offered to young artists.
